Kratom is an evergreen tree in the coffee family, Rubiaceae. Historically, the natives of Southeast Asia used the leaves of the Kratom tree to alleviate a range of conditions, including muscle pain, arthritis, and migraines.

The leaves of the Kratom plant contain two important psychoactive alkaloids including mitragynine and 7-hydroxy mitragynine.

The consumption of these two compounds is generally associated with stimulant effects when used in low doses, and sedative effects when used in high doses.

However, there are limited scientific reports to prove such claims.
